An 11-year-old boy reportedly died soon after he was found with a shoelace tied around his neck on Monday at a New York City migrant shelter.

The unconscious child was located at 5 p.m. in the lobby of the Stratford Arms Hotel, where illegal immigrant families reside in the Upper East Side, police and law enforcement sources said, according to the New York Post.

The shoelace was wrapped around the young boy’s neck when he was found unconscious, according to the outlet. The child was living at the hotel, which kicked out single migrants to make room to house migrant families. The victim was transported to Roosevelt Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the outlet reported. The medical examiner is expected to determine the child’s cause of death as an investigation is ongoing.

New York City is attempting to expel migrants by offering them plane tickets to leave for other states, or places outside of the country, according to dozens of migrants the Daily Caller News Foundation interviewed in November. However, many migrants refuse to leave the city.

The number of migrants in New York City’s care outpaced the homeless population in local shelters in June. There were 50,000 migrants in the city’s care at the time, including in local hotels and temporary shelters. This exceeded the 49,700 homeless residents under the care of the city.
