Famous country singer Jelly Roll opened up about the depths of his addiction to cocaine and his relationship with alcohol in an interview published Wednesday.

The successful country music star has had a number of run-ins with the law and faced at least 40 drug charges over the course of his life. He admitted that cocaine was his go-to drug and told People that he paired it with alcohol, making it difficult for him to separate those two vices from one another.

“I had to learn that you could drink alcohol without doing cocaine. It took me a long time to learn that,” he said.

“I’ve never said that, but that’s real,” Jelly Roll said.

He went on to explain the intensity of his addiction issues.

“There was a long time where I just assumed, when people told me they drank without doing cocaine, I was like, I thought we only drank to do cocaine.”

The Grammy-award winning country star admitted to going through a difficult adjustment when he tried to quit his cocaine habit and that his relationship with alcohol became complicated.

“I thought [drinking] was to make us not feel like drug addicts. Nobody wants to snort cocaine sober, then you’re a drug addict. But I had to re-look at my relationship with alcohol like that,” he told People. “I never really had a problem with alcohol, so I’ll still have a cocktail, but very, especially this year, very seldomly.”

He explained how he has been managing his addictions and noted he has thrown himself into his faith and has been giving back to his community as part of his healing process.

“Like, special night kind of stuff, like the night of the CMAs, of course we partied. But I just try to stay away from drugs,” Jelly Roll said.

The famous artist is cognizant of his past and remains dedicated to his sobriety journey.

“I’m a man that’s figuring it out … a man that comes from a place nobody figured it out,” he said. (RELATED: Rapper Allegedly Gobbled Up Cocaine During Traffic Stop To Hide It From Cops, Police Say)

“I’ve made a lot of peace with my past. I mean, it still haunts me like the ghosts I know, but I tell you what, I don’t think about doing no drugs today,” Jelly Roll said. “As far as today goes, I don’t know about tomorrow, but I can tell you, today, right now, I’m happy.”
