A dead shark washed up on Cape Cod beach during the cold spell Feb. 5, and appears to have suffered from horrible wounds before it died.

The carcass was discovered by local photographer Amie Medeiros at 2:30 p.m., and had a visible bloody injury on the side of its body. “Not what I was expecting to find on my frozen winter adventure,” she wrote in the comments to her Instagram post. The image of the carcass was devastating and it was obvious the shark endured a horrific encounter just prior to its death.

The maimed, frozen shark was washed up on the icy Massachusetts shore of Cold Storage Beach and was the last thing anyone wanted to stumble across. It appeared to be partially frozen, and a good chunk of the shark’s side, as well as the side of its face were completely missing from the animal’s deceased body.

The shark had washed up on its side and there was a pool of blood visibly mixed in with the slush and snow that surrounded its body. (RELATED: Shocking Video Shows Man Wrestling Shark On New York Beach)

The exact cause of the injury that led to the death of this animal remains unclear, but whatever happened to this shark was most certainly painful, and likely to have caused its death.

“Ice contains no future, just the past, sealed away,” Medeiros wrote alongside the image of the deceased animal. “As if they’re alive, everything in the world is sealed up inside, clear and distinct. Ice can preserve all kinds of things that way – cleanly, clearly. That’s the essence of ice, the role it plays,” she wrote, apparently quoting Japanese writer Haruki Murakami.
