A timelapse video shared Friday morning by meteorologist Colin McCarthy showed America grinding to a halt amid a mass global IT outage.

Millions of people are stranded in airports around the world Friday morning as banks, hospitals, media outlets and a slew of other businesses deal with a catastrophic shutdown of what appears to be a software issue at CrowdStrike. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) website showed “no active en route events” as of 10:55 am Friday morning, four hours after posting about the outage.

Airports such as General Edward Lawrence Logan International in Boston, Harry Reid International in Las Vegas and others are under an “airport closure” status, with delays at Atlanta and Detroit. The FAA said they’re continuing to work closely with airports as they “work to resume normal operations.”

You can literally see America grinding to a halt in this wild video shared by McCarthy:

CrowdStrike attributed the outage to an error in their software, not a cyberattack. The firm is arguably one of the biggest in the world, with some of its top holders being Blackrock, Vanguard and State Street, according to Yahoo Finance.

Forbes described the situation as “carnage,” with some users reporting their entire organizations seemed to be stuck in bot loops or entirely wiped out. It’ll likely take until the fog of this has lifted for the real damage to show. Some people are posting possible solutions, but most are telling those impacted to sit tight.

What a shame no one warned us that this type of technological outage was possible, upending the extremely vulnerable and unsustainable system we’ve cultivated for ourselves in the modern world. Oh wait, we did!

The general threat of human error, domestic terrorism, weather, natural disasters and the possibility of a major solar storm massacring all electronics are constant while our lawmakers do nothing to mitigate potential devastation. Did you know that weather radar systems went down in April, leaving the National Weather Service (NWS) without access to vital data? To put in perspective how insane this is: When the Nazi’s invaded Amsterdam, one of the things they purportedly did was remove the weather forecast from the newspaper. These simple, everyday things we’re completely ungrateful for, from the weather forecast to the Internet, are not sustainable in their current form, and most of you don’t know what to do without them. And we need to learn to survive without these things while politicians do nothing to protect them.
