During the Islamic State’s rapid expansion last summer, many observers wondered where the terror group came from and how it could’ve gobbled up so much territory so quickly.

The group developed out of al-Qaida in Iraq and expanded after the U.S. troop withdrawal in 2011. ISIS declared the establishment of its so-called caliphate last June. The U.S. began fighting Islamic State in August of 2014, launching an airstrike campaign in Iraq that later extended to Syria.

After nearly a year, the U.S. has spent nearly $3 billion and hasn’t succeeded in reducing Islamic State-held territory in any significant manner. (RELATED: The Staggering Cost Of A Largely Failed Fight Against ISIS)
