Democratic Rep. Charlie Crist of Florida defended President Joe Biden’s characterization of Republicans as an example of “semi-fascism” during a Sunday appearance on CNN.

“He’s got to express and be honest about what he feels in his heart and soul,” Crist, who won the Democratic nomination to challenge Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, told CNN host Pamela Brown. “I think that is probably exactly what he did.” (RELATED: ‘Leftist Mindset’: DeSantis Rips Hochul, Crist For Treating Republicans Like ‘Second-Class Citizens’)

Crist, who labeled DeSantis as “dictatorial” last week, praised Biden during the appearance.

“He’s trusted. He’s a decent guy. He works hard. He tells the truth,” Crist said.

Crist also attacked DeSantis over the Florida governor’s clash with Disney over parental rights legislation.

“Governor DeSantis teed off on Walt Disney,” Crist said. “Why? Because they decided to express their right to free speech about a piece of legislation the governor was considering signing. As a result, because they exercised their right to free speech, he tees off on them. Now, I don’t know what term you want to apply to that. I think he is an autocrat who clearly wants to tell everybody what to do.”

“He is anti-democratic. I’ll put that label on him,” Crist continued. “I am a Democrat running to protect democracy, everybody’s right to vote and he is on the other side of it making it hard to mail in ballots.”

The DeSantis campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment by the Daily Caller News Foundation.
