Two American tourists were reportedly found dead Tuesday in their room at the luxury Hotel Rancho Pescadero in El Pescadero, Baja California Sur, Mexico.

Local police and paramedics arrived at the scene at around 9 p.m. and found the pair with no vital signs. The bodies were identified as John Heathco, 41, and Abby Lutz, 22, according to ABC News.

The cause of death for both individuals was intoxication by an undetermined substance, the Baja California Sur Attorney General’s Office told ABC News. They had reportedly been dead for about 10 hours before they were discovered. Police found no signs of violence on their bodies, the outlet noted.

The Hotel Rancho Pescadero, located in the picturesque town of El Pescadero, is a popular luxury hotel. The property belongs to Hyatt Hotels Corporation, according to ABC News. (RELATED: Ohio Architect And Fiancée Found Dead After Allegedly Disappearing While Visiting Family In Mexico: Reports)

The local Attorney General’s office has taken the reins of the ongoing investigation into the deaths. Although the substance that caused the deaths remains undetermined, there have been several similar cases of U.S. tourists in Mexico dying due to gas poisoning. In October 2022, three American citizens died of carbon monoxide poisoning in their Airbnb in a Mexico City neighborhood.
