In sad news out of Major League Baseball, San Diego Padres Chairman and owner Peter Seidler has passed away. He was 63 years old.

The Padres announced Seidler’s death Tuesday.

Erik Greupner, who is the CEO of the Padres, issued a statement on the passing of Seidler.

“The Padres organization mourns the passing of our beloved Chairman and owner, Peter Seidler. Today, our love and prayers encircle Peter’s family as they grieve the loss of an extraordinary husband, father, son, brother, uncle, and friend,” said Greupner. “Peter was a kind and generous man who was devoted to his wife, children, and extended family. He also consistently exhibited heartfelt compassion for others, especially those less fortunate.” (RELATED: Super Bowl XLI Champion Matt Ulrich Dead At 41)

Greupner went on to say the impact that he made on the city of San Diego, as well as the entire sport of baseball, “will be felt for generations.”

“His generous spirit is now firmly embedded in the fabric of the Padres. Although he was our Chairman and owner, Peter was at his core a Padres fan. He will be dearly missed.”

A two-time survivor of cancer, Seidler was recovering from a procedure that he underwent back in September, still battling a months-long illness.

The San Diego Padres are suspending all non-essential business to mourn Seidler.
