Johnny Depp made a surprise appearance at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, and he did it in the most epic way.

The actor levitated from the ceiling of the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. Stunned fans watched as he floated through the space wearing an astronaut suit. Depp took on the persona of the show’s mascot, the Moon Person, in what many are calling his official comeback to the world of entertainment. This was his first major U.S. television appearance since 2017 when he was on Jimmy Kimmel Live, according to TMZ.

After Jack Harlow, Fergie and Lizzo performed, Depp floated in, suddenly appearing from the top of the building. “And you know what? I needed the work,” Depp was heard saying, as he descended and continued to hover over the main stage. Fans welcomed Depp back to the scene with roaring applause and seemed thrilled by his dramatic entrance.

His suit was a very realistic representation of the real deal, and even included a full helmet that made his voice echo when he addressed the audience. His second floating moment involved Depp swooping in and saying, “Hey VMAs, let’s get back to the fucking music, shall we?” RELATED: (Johnny Depp’s Popularity Soars As He Joins TikTok)

The last levitation involved Depp joking about his own lack of acting work in recent years. “I just want you guys to know that I’m available for birthdays, bar mitzvahs, bat mitzvahs, weddings, any ol’ thing you need… ANYTHING, you name it. So, oh, I’m also a dentist,” he said as the show returned from a commercial break.

Prior to this comeback, Depp lost the role of Grindlewald in the “Fantastic Beasts” franchise and spent years as a Hollywood pariah after ex-wife Amber Heard accused him of domestic abuse in 2016, according to USA Today and Variety. On June 1, a Virginia jury found that Heard defamed Depp and awarded the Pirates of the Caribbean star $15 million in damages. Depp’s career picked up almost immediately, enabling him to clinch the role of King Louis XV in the upcoming film Jeanne du Barry, according to Deadline.
