United Nations chief Antonio Guterres said Monday that the human race must “co-operate or perish” when it comes to climate change.

Guterres made the comment at the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Egypt, or COP27M, where world leaders, activists, and researchers gathered to discuss how none of their countless prior conferences have made a difference in saving humanity from Mother Nature. “We are on a highway to Hell with our foot on the accelerator,” he cried, according to the BBC.

He continued that if our species does not find a way to manage carbon emissions, we’re condemning future generations to climate catastrophes. Guterres called upon the U.S. and China as having a “particular responsibility” to come together in their mission to stop climate change, Reuters noted.

This 27th conference on the issue of climate change has certainly been more eventful than those previous. At some point in the first day’s events, newly appointed British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak was rushed off stage by his aides, footage of which was shared online. It’s currently unclear what information he was provided to elicit such a sudden response. (RELATED: A Host Of Cartoonish Bond Villains Are Deciding Your Fate From The Swiss Alps)

French President Emmanuel Macron has already seemingly made a significant splash at the conference, demanding countries stick to their emission-cutting plans and begging the world not to lose their focus on climate change despite the Ukraine war, the BBC continued. His sentiments were echoed by a number of world leaders, many coming from developing island, African, and Asian nations that are battling some of the worst extreme weather events in reported history.
