Analysis released Wednesday found Washington, D.C., has the highest homicide rate in the country.

WalletHub assessed statistics from the 40 most populated cities in the U.S. and found Washington, D.C., had the highest homicide rates in 2023, and when assessing the change in rates between this year, 2022 and 2021. Just behind the nation’s capital was Memphis, Tennessee, followed by Detroit, MI, Milwaukee, WI, and Atlanta, GA.

Democrat-run cities have significantly higher homicide rates than Republican-run cities overall, the researchers also noted. This may not come as a surprise to many, as Democrat-run cities have had the highest overall crime and homicide rates of all cities in the last few years.

Research released in June 2022 found D.C. was one of the “worst run” cities in the country. Over a year later, D.C. is still one of the least-safe cities, and now we understand why. Along with high homicide rates, D.C. ranks extremely low on scales of community safety. But it also ranks No. 1 for number of law enforcement officers per capita. The safest cities were Chesapeake, VA, Lincoln, NE, Sacramento, CA, Tucson and Chandler, AZ.

The good news is homicides seem to be dropping. In the cities surveyed, homicide rates dropped by an average of around five percent between Q3 2021 and Q3 2023.
